In the early hours of today, 28 February 2026, the Zionist state of Israel and US imperialism launched a joint military attack on Iran. Israeli Defence Minister Yisrael Katz announced: „Israel has launched a pre-emptive strike against Iran to eliminate threats to the state.“ Netanyahu proudly declared: „The US and Israel have begun an operation that will put an end to the existential threat posed by Iran.“ Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. military had begun „large-scale combat operations“ on Iranian soil, calling on the Iranian military to „lay down their arms“ and urging the Iranian people to „take control to their own government“.
While the US has been mobilising forces for months in preparation for an attack on Iran, it has also been engaged in indirect diplomatic talks with Iran. The third round of nuclear negotiations, mediated by Oman, took place in Geneva, Switzerland. They were due to resume on 3 March. However, the current attack on Iran suggests that the negotiations were merely a façade for the USA. Israel has declared the Iranian regime an existential threat, even though it was weakened militarily in the „12-day war“ in June 2025 by the USA, Israel and their allies. The destruction of the mullah regime and its replacement with a regime friendly to Israel is a declared state goal of Israel.
The fascist Trump administration fully supports Israel in achieving this goal. In his last address to the nation before the US Congress, Trump adopted the narrative of the existential threat posed by Iran and expanded it to include the threat to the US.
‚Iran is the main sponsor of all terrorist organisations in the world, and it is even developing a nuclear bomb with which it could attack the United States.‘ The idea that Iran poses an ‚existential threat‘ to the US is an obvious lie. The joint attack by the USA and Israel aims to initiate regime change in Iran. If this ultimate goal cannot be achieved, the intention is to destroy Iran’s military power and weaken the regime as much as possible.
The real reason for this aggression is that the anti-people, fascist mullah regime in the Middle East cannot be controlled by the US, Western imperialists or Israel. It acts independently of them and has good relations with China and Russia that are constantly expanding. A regime change in Iran through military intervention by the USA and Israel — the world’s most powerful imperialist force — and a state led by arch-Zionist forces cannot be in the interest of the Iranian people. This war can bring them nothing but more death, misery, barbarism and fascism! Workers of all countries and democratically minded people everywhere must stand up against this imperialist-Zionist aggression against Iran.
Overthrowing the mullah regime is necessary, but this is not the concern of any reactionary or imperialist power; it is the concern of the working class and the people of Iran. Initially, the mullah regime responded to the attack with limited rocket attacks on Israel, Israeli-occupied territories in Palestine, and American military bases in various Arab states in the Gulf region. Most of the missiles were intercepted in the air and did not cause much damage. However, they demonstrated Iran’s ability to defend itself. This also demonstrates that this war has the potential to escalate throughout the Middle East. This would be a devastating catastrophe for all peoples in the region.
Germany, one of the main supporters of Zionist Israel for ‚reasons of state‘, is holding back in the current war. They are hoping that the USA and Israel will overthrow the mullah regime. Once this ‚dirty work‘ is complete, they will be the first to seek to do business with a new Iranian regime. It is no coincidence that the Shah’s son was a distinguished guest and one of the main speakers at the demonstration of one million Iranian exiles in Munich in February. If Trump and Netanyahu do not achieve their goal, German imperialism will also be capable of doing business with the weakened mullah regime. We demand: This new imperialist war must end immediately with an unconditional ceasefire and the resumption of ‚peace negotiations‘ in the interests of the people.
Of course, real peace in the Middle East will not be achieved through negotiations between imperialist and reactionary powers, but only through the determined struggle of the peoples of the Middle East for peace and revolution.
The only salvation lies in the unity of the working class, proletarian internationalism and the banner of socialism!
